Book Review#19: A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer (#book 1)

Fall in love, break the curse.

Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year, Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall, thought he could be saved easily if a girl fell for him. But that was before he turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. Before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, Harper learned to be tough enough to survive. When she tries to save a stranger on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s pulled into a magical world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. A prince? A curse? A monster? As she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is the modern retelling of #beautyandthebeast , that brings three intriguing, complex characters, featuring a high-school senior, snarky, smart, and cynical Harper with a bad leg from cerebral palsy and also a raft of family troubles, who finds herself snatched from her world to the kingdom of Emberfall, where Prince Rhen has been forced to relive the autumn of his 18th birthday 300 times now, with his Guardsman Grey.
Desperate to get back to her very troubled family, Harper isn’t quite clear on the role she’s supposed to be playing or whether she wants to play it. But as Rhen, his friend Grey, and the kingdom work their way into her heart, she learns of the dark forces at play and is determined to stand against them.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely is an amazing retelling, of the beauty and the beast, is a delicate, mostly successful balance of darkness, gore, magic, humor, snark, and heart, and horses (yeah they play the most important partπŸ˜…), there’s a lot of dark stuff, from the hacking, stabbing, to a sadistic villainess who makes her victim spit blood just for the fun. But in this murky world, young Harper’s snarky ways, kind heart, and considerable courage open up new possibilities and unexpected hope.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely is mine first ever dark fantasy read. I have read many retellings but this is some then strong and intense. The character’s were well developed, the plot was amazing, and the writing style was easy yet gripping.

I love the duologue as it gave me a clear image of the situation, and when Rhen turns into a monstor I got the crystal clear impression of Rhen’s feeling. The war part was mine Favourite, I love how the author managed to show what every single character’s feeling and gave them the right to choose their path. P.S: Thank you KAY for hosting the buddy reading session of #acursesodarkandlonely or else I wouldn’t have read it yetπŸ™ˆ
